Psalm 1

The Secret of True Happiness.

Psalm one summarizes the whole book of Psalms in the Bible. This Psalm begins with a word “Blessed” which means joy.  A person who is not influenced by evil character is a blessed man.  He is in right relationship with God and enjoys peace in his heart.  He has been blessed by God to become a blessing to others. He does not follow the advice of wicked and company with evil people those who mock God.

He leads a separated life from the values of this world.  This separation is not isolation from others but contact without contamination. The assimilation with the world is a gradual process starting with walking, standing and sitting. The life of Lot and Peter are prime examples of it.  He delights himself in the Word of God and meditates on it daily.   Meditation of the Word of God is to the soul what digestion of food is to the body.  We must allow the Holy Spirit to use the Word of God to transform us to the image of Christ.  We must be saturated with the Word of God to face temptations and trails.  As a man thinks so is he. So we must allow the Word to become the source of our spiritual nourishment.  Do we assimilate God’s Word in our daily life?

The blessed person is like a fruitful tree planted along the riverbank.  Trees are always a blessing. They provide shadow, hold soil and produce fruit. They need light, water and root to grow. The godly are like fruitful trees and they produce spiritual fruit in due season (Gal 5:22-23).  We must allow the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us. The strength of a tree is its roots. They determine the tree’s strength to produce fruit. Trees are not planted in the dry ground but where there is water resource.  We must be separated from the world and filled with the Word of God to become fruitful Christians (John 15:5).  Only a Spirit controlled believer prosper and become fruitful in life. Are we rooted in Christ and his Word? Are we connected to the spiritual resource to grow and become fruitful for Christ?

The Psalmist contrasts the godly and the wicked in verse 5-6. The wicked are like chaff. They have no root, produces no fruit and unstable. They reject the Word of God and perish in their wickedness. They have no hope.  But God knows the godly and watches over them.  God knows those who are his (2 Tim 2:19).  Genuine Christians build their lives upon Christ and do not live a life of lawlessness (Matt 7:23).

They have eternal life through Jesus Christ.  To have eternal life is to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent (John 17:3). They are at right relationship with God and righteous (2 Cor 5:21).

May God help us to grow in the grace of God and the knowledge of Christ to become fruitful Christians!
